MusicBird, a Switzerland-based music rights investment company, has acquired the song catalog of Greek-Swedish songwriter and producer, Alexander “Alex P” Papaconstantinou.
The acquisition covers Papaconstantinou’s writer’s share and his share of publishing across a ‘collection of songs’, MusicBird said Tuesday (September 19).
Papaconstantinou adopted his pseudonym Alex P in 2011 when he joined RedOne production and 2101 Songs writing team in 2011. He has since played a key role in producing and co-writing several chart-topping hits.
Notable achievements during his time with RedOne include co-writing and producing Enrique Iglesias’ hit I Like How It Feels and contributing to the Khaled album C’est La Vie.
His collaboration with Marc Anthony led to the Latin Grammy-winning salsa track Vivir Mi Vida, a rendition of C’est La Vie, which won a Latin Grammy and holds the record for the second-longest run inside the Billboard Latin Songs top 5 at 51 weeks.
Papaconstantinou’s projects with RedOne earned him three BMI Awards and a Latin Grammy.
Additionally, Papaconstantinou also penned and products hits for global pop icons like Paulina Rubio (Boys Will Be Boys), Jennifer Lopez (Live it Up ft Pitbull), and Nicki Minaj (Whip It). He has also contributed entries to the Eurovision Song Contest, including ‘Fuego’ by Eleni Foureira.
Commenting on the deal with MusicBird, Papaconstantinou, said: “I am extremely proud of the songs I have written over the last decade or so and to see those songs find a new home with a progressive and passionate team is fantastic as I look forward to the next chapter in my career.”
“We continue to be laser focused on bringing timeless hits from diverse artists and writers into the MusicBird collection.”
Paul Brown, MusicBird
MusicBird CEO Paul Brown said: “We continue to be laser focused on bringing timeless hits from diverse artists and writers into the MusicBird collection and to be able to work with such an incredibly talented writer in Alex, who has written some major Latin music hits as well as broader pop hits, is very exciting for our team.”
The transaction expands MusicBird’s portfolio which already includes artists and songwriters such as Midge Ure (Vienna, Dancing With Tears in My Eyes, Fade to Grey), J.R. Rotem (known for hits by Rihanna, Jason Derulo, Fall Out Boy, Iyaz, and Sean Kingston), and multiple Grammy Award-winning artist Shaggy (It Wasn’t Me, Angel, Boombastic).
The company entered the music acquisition arena in 2021 with a plan to source hits from diverse musical landscapes. In February 2023, MusicBird secured a $100 million loan facility from international bank Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group to facilitate additional music rights acquisitions.
The loan allowed it to acquire the catalog of Scottish songwriter, recording artist and producer Midge Ure in March.
