Overview
Joining the Copyright team in New York or Nashville, the Director, Copyright will document, revise and develop existing processes that enable cross-territorial teams within the business to increase the speed and quality of our registrations and in turn maximise royalty collections.
You will also develop and implement strategies to optimise and scale our business, including identifying new revenue streams and streamlining our internal processes as well as build and maintain relationships with societies, sub-publishers and co-publishers.
Representing Kobalt’s interest in our effort to shape the future of the publishing industry, you support the VP and Senior Director, Copyright and additional stakeholders across the Senior Leadership team as well as working closely with key stakeholders within the Copyright department, wider operational departments such as our Royalties & Tracking department, Tech, Writer & Publisher Relations and Finance.
WHAT DOES A COPYRIGHT DIRECTOR DO AT KOBALT?
- You oversee Kobalt’s copyright operations in North America, across key societies – ASCAP, BMI, SESAC, GMR, HFA, MLC, SOCAN, CMRRA, managing our Copyright Source Relations team in North America (across our NY & Nashville offices) and report to the Senior Director, Copyright (UK).
- You will work to improve existing processes as well as seek opportunities to increase revenue across the catalogue.
- You build relationships with senior counterparts across the industry (incl. PRO’s and Publishers) and seek opportunities to become a visible figure across the industry, representing Kobalt across relevant committees/PRO working groups keeping internal stakeholders informed of any internal or industry-wide updates.
WHAT SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
- You have relevant industry experience in music publishing, licensing, copyright and royalty processes as well as up to date on current industry affairs in order to recognize any potential impact on Kobalt and how to effectively deliver solutions if needed.
- You have experience in leading, managing and motivating teams for effectiveness as well as experience communicating to a wide-ranging audience of varying seniority, skill, and knowledge.
- You have strong project management skills, using monday.com or similar emerging technologies to stay on top of your workload as well as an ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams across different time zones.
- You are comfortable working with KPIs and OKRs and have a track-record of excellent organisation & prioritisation skills, working under high pressure and to tight deadlines.
- You have experience of attending and participating in industry wide events and groups (such as NMPA, PRO working groups).
- You have experience in analysing and interpreting data to make informed business decisions as well as an ability to think of improvements to existing tools and processes.

The range provided is for NYC-based hires only and will be commensurate with candidate experience. Pay ranges for candidates in other locations other than NYC may differ based on the cost of labor in that location.
Pay range: $96,000—$120,000 USD
