Acquisitive Toronto-based music rights company ole has snapped up a giant music publishing catalogue from Sony Pictures containing the soundtracks to film and television releases between 1993 and 2012.
The catalogue includes compositions from a variety of TV shows such as Wheel of Fortune, Breaking Bad (pictured), Dawson’s Creek, The Nanny, Rescue Me, and films including Angels & Demons, The Da Vinci Code, Groundhog Day, Rudy, Jumanji, Legends of the Fall, Moneyball, Mr. Deeds, The Patriot, The Quick and the Dead, Superbad, Step Brothers, Stuart Little, and Hotel Transylvania, among others.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the catalogue is believed to have been sold for around $130 million.
Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) is a subsidiary of Sony Entertainment Inc., itself a subsidiary of Tokyo-based Sony Corporation.
Founded in 2004, and with operations in Toronto, Nashville, New York and Los Angeles, ole owns rights to more than 45,000 songs in total. The Sony Pictures catalogue buyout is its second major film music acquisition in recent years, following its swoop for Los-Angeles-based music production company, the MusicBox, which owned the rights to 24,000 songs.
Ole will work closely with Sony/ATV Music Publishing on the SPE catalogue – currently the music publishing administration partners for the Sony Pictures entertainment catalogue.Music Business Worldwide
