BMG is expanding in Latin America with a new office in Mexico.
The company has begun recruiting for a General Manager and synch and copyright staff and will open its doors in Mexico City mid-year.
The initial focus of the office will be on developing services for BMG’s existing Anglo-American and Spanish language clients, before building a local repertoire roster.
Like all BMG operations, it will offer music publishing and recordings under one roof and off the same global cloud-based platform.
The company has had an operation in São Paulo, Brazil, since 2016 which likewise evolved from managing existing repertoire to developing its own local signing strategy, from rock group Ego Kill Talent and pop artist Zeeba to one of the most renowned Sertanejo artists, Henrique & Diego.
Last month new IFPI figures showed the extent of the opportunity in South America.
The region’s recorded music market grew by 31.2% in 2021, with Brazil (+32.0%) and Mexico (+27.7%) accounting for 66.5% of revenues. Streaming revenues accounted for 85.9% of the South American market, one of the highest proportions in any region.
The new Mexico operation will work closely with BMG’s US-based Latin clients and BMG Spain’s local roster.
BMG’s US Latin roster includes in publishing Erika Ender, Pitbull, Gente De Zona, Paloma Mami, Maffio, and the award-winning DEL Regional Mexican music publishing catalog. In records it includes Carlos Santana, Jory Boy, Darkiel, Lito MC Cassidy, and the Gold Star Music catalog featuring the recordings of Hector El Father.
BMG’s roster in Spain includes in publishing David Otero, Maldita Nerea, Efecto Pasillo, Sober, Pipo Beatz and Fran Fusion and in records Mecano, Arce, Adexe & Nau, Hard GZ, Belako, María Pelae, Azucar Moreno, Sweet California, and 2022 Eurovision contestant Chanel.
“We believe there is a significant gap in the market for our service-based ethic.”
Dominique Casimir, LATAM
Dominique Casimir, EVP Repertoire & Marketing EU, APAC & LATAM, said: “Latin America is one of the most dynamic regions in music today.
“While we have a long history of working in these territories through third parties, now is the time to offer our clients an end-to-end BMG experience. We believe there is a significant gap in the market for our service-based ethic.”
Added Casimir: ”Streaming is vital, but reflecting our strong music publishing business, we will be equally focused on optimizing performance income for touring artists in the huge South America live music market.”
