The Company provides global music rights, payment and metadata analysis solutions on a B2B basis to music companies, artists and other rightsholders. The Company works with some of the most culturally and commercially influential music companies in the world. The Company has resources in Europe, the US and Asia.
The Position
The Director of Business & Legal Affairs is responsible for representing recorded music rightsholders in negotiations and renewals with music streaming services and other licensees of music. The Director is based in the US and collaborates with colleagues and external partners globally. The role reports to the Chief Operating Officer.
The Location
Primarily remote in New York City or in the tri state area, with the ability to take meetings in NYC.
Specific Responsibilities
- Work closely with the COO and departmental colleagues to prioritize and create a timeline and strategy for each potential deal and renewal, ensuring that the approach aligns with Company’s overall goals and philosophy.
- Identify and assess potential new opportunities and partners with whom to establish relationships and deals.
- Conduct initial assessment of incoming potential licensing requests and opportunities.
- Gather data from the business and the rightsholders it represents to understand the performance of existing deals.
- Establish detailed proposals for upcoming renewals and new partnerships.
- Draft, negotiate and manage a variety of commercial agreements relating to the digital use of recorded music.
- Provide legal advice on an array of legal issues and develop/implement best strategies for execution.
- Contribute to the management, tracking and resolution of disputes around rights and other matters.
- Collaborate with internal teams (finance, royalty reporting, data analytics, commercial partnerships) to ensure the successful implementation and operation of Company’s DSP agreements.
- Work alongside and manage external global legal advisors as necessary.
- Maintain strong working relationships with external parties over the life of the deal, anticipating and informing mutually beneficial terms in the next renewal.
- Stay abreast of and research legal, business and technological trends and developments that impact the use, consumption and marketing of recorded music.
Requirements
- Strong academic accomplishments including a degree in law and an active license to practice law, preferably in New York or California.
- 5+ years of experience in business and legal affairs with experience in music licensing or IP licensing in entertainment.
- Background in digital deal negotiations with a demonstrated knowledge of the music industry, music labels, recorded rights, music streaming and the emerging uses of recorded music.
- Early career at a law firm preferably working in Commercial, Corporate or IP departments (with some focus on media/entertainment or experience in house within the music industry).
- Awareness of corporate, tax and regulatory issues faced by a digital rights business operating on a global stage.
- Commercial and business acumen, with a demonstrated ability to apply the law to real-world business challenges and opportunities.
- Curious, flexible, and adept at working in a range of complex commercial and innovative arrangements.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment with multiple projects and priorities, working independently and on a team.
- High level of comfort in GSuite and comfort with project management tools.
- Practical, organized and pragmatic approach to work; strong attention to detail and outstanding drafting, communication, negotiation and influencing skills.
- Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills, integrity and work ethic.
Compensation
A base salary commensurate with relevant skills, experience, network and location at an annual rate in the range of $140,000 to $160,000 plus bonus and competitive benefits will be offered to the successful hire.
